普段から色々と応援してくれている、いとこの裕美ちゃんが、わざわざ夕刊からタイプして、オバマ就任演説の各紙の訳の違いを書いてくれました。ジャーナリスト池上彰さんが比較をされていたそうです。
今自分は、オバマのDream from My Father（邦題「マイドリーム」）を聞きながら走ったり運動したりしているのですが、あのカリスマ性が、演説をしていて自分の中からわ～っと湧きあがってくる様子が書かれたところがありました。「演説しているうちに、人は自分を話を聞きたいと思っているのだと気づいた。だんだんと人が集まってこちらに顔を向けている。自分と聴衆とが一体となっているのがわかった」というような内容です。（ダウンロードしたもので実際の本がないので記憶に頼っていますが。）大学生時代の話です。
紙面に書かれた訳の場合、文字を忠実に訳す以外ないわけですが、通訳の時はこのエネルギーが自分にも伝わってくることがあります。
シリコンバレーのCEOの方々なども、カリスマ性があるからそこまで来れた方々ですから、スピーチをされる時はそのエネルギーがびんびんに伝わってくるときがあります。
一字一句を訳そうとするより、テーマに集中した平易な訳を心がけ、感情的にならないようにしながら自分が感じているエネルギーが伝わるよう気を配ることが大事なような気がします。

アメリカのオバマ新大統領は、演説が上手なことで知られています。では、どのように優れているのか。
テレビでは、落ち着いた話し方であること、間の取り方が絶妙であることなどはわかりますが、肝心の中身はわかりません。演説文を確かめたくなります。こんなときこそ、新聞の出番。就任演説の全文が今月２１日の夕刊各紙に掲載されました。
ただし、各紙に掲載された全文は、当然のことながら日本語訳。各紙が独自に訳していますから、それぞれ文章が異なります。
演説でオバマ大統領は、アメリカが過去の危機を乗り越えられたのは、指導者の能力ばかりでなく、人民が建国の理想に忠実だったからだと語った上で、こう述べます。

「これまではそうだった。そして、この世代の米国人もそうあらねばならない」朝日
「ずっとそうやってきた。この世代の米国人もそう同様にしなけれべならない」読売
「それが我々の伝統だった。我々の世代にとってもそうありつづける。」毎日
新聞によって演説文の雰囲気が異なりますね。
アメリカの経済が危機に陥った原因を、オバマ大統領は、こう分析します。

米国民としての自己批判のトーンは、読売が一番厳しい表現になっています。
演説は佳境に入ります。
